My recent foray into kegging has revealed two serious problems. \u00a0The first of these has to do with my kegorator setup.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The\u00a0problem, as you can see to the right, is whenever I pour I get a head of foam. \u00a0At first I suspected the usual suspects – bad poor technique or beer lines which were too short. \u00a0But a closer look\u00a0revealed\u00a0something different:
\n<\/a>
\nAt the beginning of the pour (top), pure foam comes out of the tap. \u00a0But after a few seconds, a proper pour ensures (below). \u00a0After the first glass, I can pour successive glasses that are perfect pours.
\n<\/a><\/p>\n

A bit of searching identified my problem – the beer lines in the tower were not being cooled, so the first bit of beer to pass through warmed, releasing its CO2<\/sub>, causing the foaming. \u00a0The flowing beer then cooled the line, resolving the issue.<\/p>\n

Problem\u00a01:<\/b>\u00a0Beer lines in tower are warm.
\nSolution:<\/b>\u00a0Create a heat-sink.<\/p>\n

Materials:<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

  1. Three feet of 1\/2″ copper pipe<\/li>\n
  2. Copper pipe cutter<\/li>\n
  3. Pipe insulation<\/li>\n
  4. Dremmel tool or saw<\/li>\n
  5. Duct tape<\/li>\n
  6. Misc common tools<\/li>\n
  7. Homebrew (helps with problem solving)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Step 1:<\/u> Cut the Tubing<\/b><\/p>\n

    <\/a><\/div>\n

    To begin, cut the tubing in half. \u00a0Slide on the tubing, and insert into the tower.<\/p>\n

    <\/a><\/div>\n

    When in place, the tubing should extend ~30cm into th fridge and cover the whole length of the beer line.<\/p>\n

    Step 2:<\/u>\u00a0Create a flap<\/b><\/p>\n

    <\/a><\/div>\n

    To increase the heat exchange capacity, we want to maximize the area of the tubing exposed to the cool air inside of the fridge. \u00a0This is done by cutting a slot along the length of the tubing that is in the fridge, and a second slot\u00a0perpendicular\u00a0to this one that goes most of the way through the tubing.<\/p>\n

    Next, using pliers, chisels, and any other tools you have on hand, open the slot, then hammer the tubing flat.<\/p>\n

    Step 3:<\/u>\u00a0Assemble<\/b><\/p>\n

    Insert the tubing – try not to break the flaps off like I did (oops).<\/p>\n

    Hold in place with tape<\/p>\n

    Insulate\u00a0with pipe insulation<\/p>\n

    <\/a><\/div>\n

    Re-install tower<\/p>\n

    So did it work – AKA Problem 2?<\/b>
    \nAnd here is the second problem with kegging – I\u00a0apparently\u00a0emptied the keg while building this beast, so my first pour was air…meaning I need to do an emergency brew session!<\/p>\n
